- Tasting Notes
A background application of wood is apparent on the red cherry, floral, wild berry and sauvage-scented aromas. The sense of underlying tension and vibrancy of the once again intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors is almost irresistible as is the outstanding complexity, balance and sheer class of the finish. This hugely long effort is harmonious and sophisticated and it should also amply repay extended cellaring. This is first-rate.

The 2015 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques has a very well-defined bouquet that offers lifted redcurrant and wild strawberry aromas, interwoven with wet limestone and almost flint-like scents. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin. This is seamless and silky smooth, a Clos Saint-Jacques determined to show the other vineyards what it can do. Beautiful delineation and focus on the finish, this is an outstanding Clos Saint-Jacques from Bruno Clair that will offer 20 or 30 years of drinking pleasure.

Bright medium red. Very ripe, smoky aromas of raspberry, strawberry and underbrush. Full, plush and sweet; at once fleshier and more complex than the preceding Gevrey premier crus. This very ripe wine boasts atypical early volume for Clos Saint-Jacques without coming across as heavy. Finishes with serious but refined tannins and excellent length. I found a bit more inner-mouth tension and floral lift when I sampled this wine from barrel but today the wine’s mineral core is hidden by a layer of baby fat.
