Almost always one of my favorite Hermitage in a vintage, the 2013 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie is the top cuvee of this estate and comes mostly from the Les Grandes Vignes lieu-dit, which is located at the very top of Hermitage hill just above the lHermite and Bessards lieux-dits. This is cool, granite-laced terroir that ripens upwards of a week to ten days behind the other terroirs. The 2013 reveals an inky purple color to go with tight, inwards notes of black raspberries, crème de cassis, crushed violets and the powdered rock-like minerality that I often associate with Bessards. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, concentrated and with building tannin, it plays in the more elegant style of the vintage, yet has real density, beautiful purity of fruit and will have 15-20 years of overall longevity.
One of my favorite Crozes Hermitage estates is the Domaine des Remizières, which is run today by the Desmeures family, with Philippe Desmeures joined in 2005 by his daughter Emilie and in 2009 by his son Christophe. The estate is located near the town of Mercurol and they make a bevy a terrific Crozes Hermitage, a solid Saint Joseph and two sensational Hermitage (a red and a white). The winemaking is relatively modern and they destem all of their grapes and utilize plenty of new oak; nevertheless, the wines have beautiful purity, plenty of texture and show ample northern Rhone typicity. This estate needs to be on every readers short list.
