- Tasting Notes
The 2014 Barolo Margheria is a very distinctive expression of Nebbiolo from Serralunga d’Alba. The bouquet offers a strong balsamic signature with eucalyptus oil and rosemary essence. Those cooling and soothing aromas are followed by bold blackberry, plum and exotic spice. Despite the cooler vintage, you do feel the power and the textural richness that is often associated with this vineyard site. The wine ages in Slavonian oak cask for 30 months. Only 5,500 bottles were made.

Rose petal, dried cherry, kirsch, mint, sage and licorice give the 2014 Barolo Margheria much of its beguiling, nuanced personality. Deceptive in its midweight structure, it packs a serious punch. The sinewy, potent Serralunga tannins need time to soften a bit, but I don’t think that will be an issue given how impeccably balanced the 2014 is in the early going. A bit of air brings out the wine’s explosive persistence and drive. A closing flourish of sage, tobacco and kirsch rounds things out in style. The only open question is how much time the 2014 needs, because it is clearly a gorgeous wine in the making.

Herbal and licorice character on the nose, but there is more fruit on the palate, which helps balance the moderately dry tannins. Only at the finish do the tannins dominate a little. Drink or hold.

Sour cherry, currant and leafy underbrush notes converge with the beefy tannins in this muscular red. Balanced, yet monolithic now and shows a bit more heft than most 2014s. Best from 2023 through 2042. 458 cases made, 100 cases imported.
